A-Z Recycling Guide -- Sharps
Sharps are NOT recyclable and should never be placed in a recycling bin, even if they are inside a closed, durable container.
Improper disposal of medical sharps poses a threat to recycling and trash workers as well as to our environment.
The following companies provide a variety of sharp disposal mail back systems. Most handle business and individual quantities. Please contact them directly for details on the services they provide.
If you cannot afford to utilize a mail back service
This is what Boulder County Public Health suggests on their website:
“…you should place your used sharps in a strong plastic or metal container with a screw-on lid that can be tightly secured. Do not use glass containers or used milk containers. Clearly label the container with the words ‘Sharps’ or ‘Biohazardous Waste’. The securely sealed container can be placed in your trash. DO NOT put the container in with your recyclables.”
Boulder County Hazardous Materials Management Facility (HMMF)
NOTE: HMMF accepts sharps from RESIDENTS ONLY. HMMF cannot accept sharps from businesses, including tattoo and acupuncture sharps.
