“The opportunity to participate in the Green Star program has provided all of us at BCSIS with a practical and effective way to show our schoolwide commitment to our environment and the Earth. One of our core values is respect for the natural world, and when children have a way they can show that respect every day through direct action, they are empowered to be thoughtful and responsible stewards of their world. The support of the Green Star program and the teaching provided has helped children and adults know that we can do something to make a difference.”

Now it's harder but we're helping to take care of our environment. We're saving trees, preserving habitat for animals, cutting down on pollution and saving lots of space in the landfills. That feels good!"

“My students have really become great recyclers. They are diligent about sorting and making sure that the receptacles are in order and clean. We have reduced the trash within our class by about 75%. We are currently brainstorming a project to be placed in the lobby of our school to remind people to recycle and the importance of doing so. Currently our plan is to create a tree out of recycled materials and have the students add leaves with sayings about what they have learned about recycling and the environment by being a Green Star School.”

" As a volunteer in the lunchroom, I was amazed at the children’s progress week by week. As expected, there were many questions in the beginning, but quickly, the students became self-reliant with their sorting. I am proud to say that after a typical lunch, Community Montessori - a school with almost 300 students - barely fills half a small trash can with waste!"

"One of our parents at Summit was inspired to write a nomination for the Environmental Protection Agency’s Environmental Achievement Award, partially based on our Green Star Schools participation. We are also incorporating many green building concepts as we grow our school, such as geothermal heating/cooling, natural lighting, better insulation, etc. Further, we brought in a healthy, organic lunch program. We were notified this past spring (’08) that we won this award. Thanks to Eco-Cycle and their staff for Eco-Cycle’s part in this acknowledgement. We are pleased to be honored for our work in trying to make the world a cleaner place."

"After several years of waiting, Eagle Crest is ecstatic to be a Green Star School! Our students loved the process of learning about the why’s and how’s of working toward zero waste. From Eco-Cycle’s brilliant education programs including Waste–Free Lunch, to Papermaking, to the various Green Star lessons leading up to our kick-off last January 2009, our kids will always remember these life-changing experiences. Through this program, we have increased student responsibility and leadership, school pride, and environmental awareness. In three months, we’ve reduced our trash production by 66% across the board. Parents say we have created composting and recycling monsters! We look forward to collaborating with other Green Star Schools and look forward to taking it to the next level with our Schoolyard Garden Program."
