A-Z Recycling Guide -- Propane Canisters
If a propane canister's certification has expired, it can be brought to various sites to be "recertified" for 5 years (at a time) until it is completely unusable. In order to be recertified, the tanks or containers must be in good condition with no excessive rust or damage; they can be then taken to various other locations listed below for recycling.
Propane tanks are NOT accepted at CHaRM (Center for Hard-to-Recycle Materials) in Boulder.

Resident Household Hazardous Waste
Boulder County’s Hazardous Materials Management Facility is open for household hazardous waste drop off from all residents of Boulder County, City and County of Broomfield, and the Town of Erie. Proof of residency (for example, your driver's license, vehicle registration, voter identification, tax certificate, lease agreement or utility bill) is required when you drop-off your wastes. Hazardous wastes are recycled or disposed of properly.
Broomfield, Longmont, and Superior hold annual or periodic hazardous waste collection events for their residents. Please call your local town/city hall for details.
Accepts unused and unwanted hazardous products year-round from residents of Boulder County, City and County of Broomfield, and Town of Erie. This includes residents of Allenspark, Boulder, Broomfield, Erie, Hygiene, Jamestown, Lafayette, Longmont, Louisville, Lyons, Nederland, Superior, and Ward. Proof of residency (e.g. driving license, voter ID, tax certificate, lease agreement) is required.
Will accept only small (up to 1lb) propane canisters, max of 5 total (not per person) a day. Fred's Propane Service will accept large propane tanks.
Materials accepted: household cleaners, solvents, fluorescent tubes, glues, cleaners, pesticides, automotive fluids, automobile batteries, paint and paint products and rechargeable and non-alkaline batteries. Radioactive, explosive, shock-sensitive, infectious, and commercially generated wastes are not accepted.
Business (commerical businesses, agencies, non-profits, institutions, religious organizations, and schools) wastes are accepted by appointment only. Please visit website for details and application:
