Expanding Recycling in Colorado
BRING MORE RECYCLING SERVICES TO YOUR COMMUNITY
CONTACT YOUR LOCAL ELECTED OFFICIALS TODAY!
Colorado’s recycling rate is only 17% — less than half of the national average recycling rate of 35%.
Some communities in Colorado recycle up to 60% of their waste because they provide the services, education, infrastructure and incentives needed to recycle more.
However, many communities don’t provide basic curbside recycling services to all residents, including 7 out of 10 of Colorado’s largest cities, such as Colorado Springs, Aurora, and Westminster. Read more in Eco-Cycle’s 2019 State of Recycling in Colorado report.
Ask your Mayor and City Council members to make recycling easy and accessible in your community. EVERY city in Colorado could be doing more, such as:
-
Expand curbside residential recycling to all residents.
-
Use financial incentives to reduce waste and increase recycling. Reduce fees for people who are recycling and composting.
-
Increase recycling access for apartments and businesses. Over half of our waste comes from apartments and businesses, yet very few have recycling services.
-
Develop more composting infrastructure and services. Half of our waste is organic material — food and yard waste — that could be turned into nutrient-rich soil amendments.
-
Collect data so that your community can set goals and measure the success of its programs.
Your voice matters, and can make a real difference in your community.
